Children born in Moldova to benefit from Moldovan citizenship

08.06.2023 Ședința plenară a Parlamentului Republicii Moldova

Chisinau, 8 June 2023 - The initiative legislative which envisages the guaranteed right to Moldova’s citizenship for each child born on the territory of Moldova was passed by 68 lawmakers in the second reading today.

Under the document, so far, the children born in Moldova have been able to get the Moldovan citizenship, only if, at the moment of birth, at least one of the parents had right to stay, benefited from international protection or was recognized by the competent authorities as stateless person. By the exclusion of these provisions, the draft aims at complying the legal norm with the provisions of the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The legislative initiative belongs to an MP of the parliamentary faction of the Action and Solidarity Party, Angela Munteanu-Pojoga.
