Chisinau, July 29, 2024 - Moldova’s parliament today convened at a solemn meeting dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution. The meeting brought together present and former MPs, former Moldovan presidents and parliament speakers, former presidents of the Constitutional Court, members of the Commission and the working group for the elaboration of the Republic of Moldova’s Constitution, who directly got involved in the working out of the state’s Fundamental Law.

"The Constitution or a state is not just a legal act; it brings a series of meanings and values, including those of an identity nature, into the lives of citizens and society as a whole. All our identity markers—language, history, traditions, culture, and religion—demonstrate that Moldovans are European and have a European vocation. Together with my fellow deputies, I want to assure you that we will continue to ensure the observance of the Constitution and the proper functioning of public authorities, and we will support our country's European path, based on unity, perseverance, and the continuous desire to build a better society, a European Moldova here at home," stated the President of Parliament, Igor Grosu.

"The Constitution is a „living” document. Like our society, it has undergone a series of transformations. The most recent achievement is the one for which the people in this room have fought—the return of the Romanian language to the Constitution. In the context of this anniversary, we must be realistic and acknowledge that we are still fighting an intense battle for the supremacy of the law in the Republic of Moldova. The joint effort of all branches of state power will ensure equality before the law for everyone. Despite the growing resistance, I am confident that we will succeed," added Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The session was also attended by Boris Negru, Doctor of Law, university professor, Knight of the Order of the Republic, who was a member of the Commission and the working group for drafting the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.

"A Constitution does not work on its own. It works when what is said is translated at its true value. Therefore, I would like human rights and freedoms to be placed at the forefront, and I would like the Republic of Moldova to find itself alongside the advanced countries of the world in the European community," emphasized Boris Negru.

During the solemn session, speeches were also given by the Deputy Parliament Speaker, the president of the „Action and Solidarity Party" Faction, Doina Gherman; the Deputy Parliament Speaker, the president of the „Communist and Socialist Bloc” Faction, Vlad Batrîncea; the chairperson of the parliamentary Committee for legal, appointments and immnunities, Veronica Roșca; the president of the Romania’s Senate’s Committee for legal matters Appointments, discipline, immunities, and validations, Cristian-Augustin Niculescu-Țâgârlaș and the member of Constitutional Court, Nicolae Roșca.

On the same occasion, Parliament is hosting the practical-scientific conference "The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova at 30 Years and European Integration," an event bringing together around 100 participants—deputies, senators from Romania, and representatives of the academic community—who will present reports on scientific investigations in the field of constitutional law and aspects of European integration. Additionally, these days, Parliament is hosting a thematic exhibition dedicated to celebrating 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, featuring over 150 publications selected from the collections of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, the Library, and the archives of Parliament, showcasing the Supreme Law of the state—the Constitution.

Constitution Day of the Republic of Moldova is celebrated annually on July 29. The Supreme Law was adopted by Parliament on July 29, 1994, and came into force on August 27, 1994.
